This course will train students in the basic principles of good empirical work: data quality, replication and interpretability Students will be asked to replicate several major studies on important economic and social problems The goal is to train students to understand what is credible empirical work and separate it from work driven by considerations other than empirical honesty and integrity. Statistical concepts will be introduced as needed but the emphasis is on data and interpretation of data using economic theory.

This course covers both micro and macro aspects of human capital. Investments by parents in the education and other human capital of their children. Intergenerational transmission of inequality. The links between specialization in particular types of human capital and coordination costs, general knowledge, and the extent of the market. The relation between human capital, population change, and economic growth is also emphasized. (=SOCI 30306)

30157. Mathematical Models. This course examines mathematical models and related analyses of social action, emphasizing a rational-choice perspective. About half the lectures focus on models of collective action, power, and exchange as developed by Coleman, Bonacich, Marsden, and Yamaguchi. Then the course examines models of choice over the life course, including rational and social choice models of marriage, births, friendship networks, occupations, and divorce. Spring QのDOCのカレンダーが発表。うーん，Quarter Passを買うべきかどうか，微妙だ... きしぇろふすきとへるつぉーくを見るなら，買った方がお得かな？

昨日，Illinoisで選挙があって，開票速報を見ていたのだけれど，なかなか興味深い傾向が。新しい投票マシーンを導入したことのごたごたはさておき，当選者の決まり方が面白い。

朝のニュースでざーっと流れていた開票速報を眺めていて，Rが勝った選挙区の得票率を見ると，Rが50-60%台しかとれてないのに対し，Dが勝った選挙区の場合，得票率が70-80%台に達していることが少なくないこと。真っ青なblue stateであるIllinoisで，仮にゲリマンダリングが行われているとしたら，非効率な（D側にとって）得票結果だけれど，どうしてこういう結果になるのか？
おそらく考えられる理由は，Dの支持者層というのは，一定の社会階層を反映していて，そういった社会階層が集まって住んでいる地域では，Dが圧倒的大差で勝つけれど，そうでないところでは，どっこいどっこいの勝負になる，ということだろうか。実際に，どの選挙区がどこに位置していて，demographicな属性がどうなっているか，というのは全然調べてないから，単なる憶測にすぎないけれども。

Do it yourself

USに来る前，法研の継続資料室で調べものをしてたら，修先生から，「森田君，一つ忠告があるんだけど」と物陰に引き込まれて，なんだなんだ，何か悪いことしたっけ？（←いっぱいあるだろ）と思っていたところ

「アメリカでは，歯医者にかかるのがすごく大変だから，悪いところあったら，日本で完全に治療していった方がいいよ」と。その話は，あちこちで聞いたことあるので，「ほっ」として（笑），とりあえず，もう10年くらい歯医者に行ってないから，大丈夫だろう，ときどき歯が痛くなっても，風のときとかだけだから，と放置しておきました。

ところが，多分，小学生か中学生頃に治療した歯の詰め物が，いきなりぽろりととれてしまった。よく知られているように，歯医者については，海外旅行保険はきかない。さて，どうしようか，と考える。

この国で，歯医者待ちに1カ月とかかかるなら，その間，何とかする方法があるに違いない，とWalgreenに行ってみる。すると，あった！　crownが外れた場合に付ける接着剤・充填剤が売ってたので，購入。自分で付けてみる。確かに，味（？）は，昔歯医者で体験したあの味だ。

で，今のところは，何とかもってます。注意書きには「あくまでtemporaryなものだよ」と太字で書いてあるけど，9月までもつかな...
