Preface
Dr. Miyoko TSUJIMURA
Professor, Graduate School of Law, Tohoku University
Director, Gender Law and Policy Center, 21st Century COE Program
Established within the context of the 21st Century COE Program, the principal objective of the Gender Law and Policy Center is to promote a variety of research projects that will elucidate the theoretical issues relating to gender, law and political processes.
The Center has functioned as a library, possessing over 4000 books concerning gender, law and public policy, and acted as a network hub for collaboration between Asian, European, and North American institutions, as well as Japanese local governments and Bar Associations.
We focus on six research themes or "clusters", including: political participation, employment, family, sexuality, human security, and gender education policy. In 2006, we held a number of research meetings including the International Seminar Series "Citizenship, Diversity and Gender : Japan, Canada, and France in Comparative Perspective". Also, the Program continued to do outstanding activities in foreign countries, such as the Program leader's lectures at the University of Milan (Italy) and the University of Ottawa (Canada).(pp.193-227).
In this "Gender Law and Policy Annual Review" vol.4, we cover our papers, reports, and lectures presented in English and French during the year 2006. Apart from these articles, we have also published the fifth and the sixth volume of our "Gender Law and Policy Research Series", under the title of "Sexuality and Law" and "Family: Gender, Liberty and Law" respectively.
In 2007, we will host second International Symposium, "International Perspectives on Gender Equality and Social Diversity", and invite distinguished researchers, including Professor Catharine A. MacKinnon as a keynote speaker. The forthcoming Annual Review will be the special volume featuring this Symposium.
We hope that the contents of this Annual Review and the aforementioned publications will work to enhance our understanding and awareness of gender issues as they are experienced in different parts of the world, and as such, will contribute to the promotion of gender equal societies everywhere.
We wish to thank all those involved for their generous support and cooperation, and we look forward to collaborating with you on related projects in the future.
