Message from the Program Leader

Miyoko TSUJIMURA
Professor, Graduate School of Law, Tohoku University

The 21st Century COE Program Gender Law and Policy Center (GELAPOC) has been established to promote gender equal society by explicating theoretical issues in law and political science, making our results public and promoting concrete policies in cooperation with the local governments and the judicial world.

It has passed a year since GELAPOC opened in AER building close to Sendai Station. During this year, we have succeeded to hold our first international symposium on Nov. 4th and 5th (2004), inviting 7 experts of gender-related issues from 3 different countries. The details of our activities as well as the results of our research activities are enclosed in the following publications: The GELAPOC News Letter (no.1-6), the annual reviews (Japanese/English), The Gender Law and Policy Research Series: Vol.1 entitled Gender-Equal Society and Positive Action, Vol.2 entitled Japanese Policy toward Gender Equality, and Vol.3 entitled Possibilities of the Gender Legal Studies and Gender Politics (Tohoku University Press).

The coming year will be an occasion to launch important activities such as the attitude survey toward gender equal policies, our participation to the 9th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women (Women's World 2005), held in Ehwa Woman's University, (Seoul) and the research conference we organize in collaboration with the Japan Association of Gender and Law in Dec. 2nd and 3rd (2005).

The success of our projects owes much to close relations with local public organizations, bar associations, universities and research institutes around the world. We will continuously make efforts to develop GELAPOC as one of the best research center on gender law and policies.

I hope you all support this project for the left three years. Thank you.
