Doctorate Program for Foreign Students in 2005 (October Admission)

1. 5 applicants are to be admitted

2. Required qualifications

A person needs to satisfy all the requirements below :

  1. Foreign nationality required
  2. Master's degree (or a degree correspondent to a master's degree) required, from Japanese or foreign universities (including for students who expect to graduate by September 2005)
  3. Conducting research on "gender law and policy in a gender equal society",
  4. Adequate ability to speak and study in Japanese.

Attention:
With regard to above (1)(2), students would be allowed to apply in some other cases. Please contact to the Admission Office in the School of Law.

3. Application period

From Tuesday, 23rd August To Friday, 26th August 2005

Attention:
The application deadline is 16:30 on 26th August 2005.

4. Application Form

1. Required Documents for Application

  1. "Application Form" and "Curriculum Vitae" --- both particular sheets are handed in at the Admission Office in the School of Law;
  2. An official Record of your grades;
    (Attention : Not required for students who got or expect to get a master degree at the School of Law, Tohoku University by September. 2005)
  3. 4 copies of your Master's thesis (or equivalent) or 4 copies of letter of reference( sealed up tightly) by a professor of this COE Program (these documents must be in English, French, German or Japanese only);
    (Attention : Not required for students who submit or expect to submit a master thesis to the School of Law, Tohoku University by September, 2005
  4. A list of your own publications (must be on A4 sized paper);
  5. 4 copies of your research plan (within 2000 words), only in English, French, German or Japanese;
  6. A (prospective) Certificate of the master's degree;
    (Attention : Not required for students who got or expect to get a master degree at the School of Law, Tohoku University by September, 2005)
  7. Examination Fee of ¥30,000 yen --- in the form of a "Postal Money Order (Ordinary)", on which you should leave the payees name blank;
  8. An Alien Registration Certificate Document, which is issued by the local city office (Only students who are staying in Japan now need this document for application.);
  9. Address Card, which is handed at the Admission Office.

5. Selection

Selection will be made by the committee, on the basis of the documents submitted.

6. Notification of Acceptance

The notice will be on the Notice Board in front of the Admission Office in the School of Law on 22nd of September, 2005. All the applicants will receive a letter from the Office.

7. School Fee

Admission Fee : ¥282,000 yen
Tuition Fee : ¥267,900 yen (October,2005-March, 2006)
(Fees are subject to change.)

8. Research Activity and Financial Aid

Successful applicants (COE Doctorate Students <Foreign Students>) must carry out research related to this COE Program as COE Doctorate Student. Each COE Doctorate Student will have a supervisor to advise them with their research. COE Doctorate Student could be appointed a COE Research Assistant. In this case, they could receive up to approximately ¥80,000 yen per month (October, 2005 - March, 2006). This assistantships could be extended until 2006. Successful applicants could receive a Special Research Grant of approximately ¥400,000 yen (for a half year ; October, 2005 - March 2006).

9. Note

  1. When applying by post, applicants should use "Registered Mail", and write in red "Application Documents for Tohoku University Graduate School of Law (COE Doctorate Program for Foreign Students)" on the front of the envelope.
  2. To make a request for an Application Form, it is necessary to include an A4 sized envelope, attached with ¥200 yen stamp and having the applicant's name, address and postal code printed clearly. For any requirement, it is necessary to join an envelope with an appropriate return postage and same information as above.
  3. Once the application documents have been accepted, no changes will be allowed.
  4. Any accepted documents will not be returned.
  5. Any accepted examination fee will not be refunded.
