Doctorate Program for Foreign Students in 2004
(The 21st Century COE Program)

  1. 5 applicants are to be admitted
  2. Required qualifications
    A person needs to satisfy all the requirements below;
    1. Be a foreign student,
    2. Have a master's degree (including students who expect to graduate by September 2004), or a degree correspondent with a master's degree from a foreign university (including students who expect to graduate by September 2004),
    3. Conducting research on "gender law and policy in a gender equal society",
    4. Must have adequate ability to speak and study in Japanese.
    Attention:
    With regard to above (2), students would be allowed to apply in some other cases. Please contact to the Admission Office in the School of Law.
  3. Application period
    From Monday 23rd August To Thursday, 26th August 2004
    Attention:
    The application deadline is 16:30 on 26th August 2004.
  4. Application Form
    1. Required Documents for Application
      1. "Application Form" and "Curriculum vitae" --- both particular sheets are handed in at the Admission Office in the School of Law;
      2. An official Record of your grades;
      3. A medical certificate --- this form is available at the Admission Office;
      4. A copy of your Master's thesis or equivalent (in English, French, German or Japanese only), or a letter of reference by a professor of this COE Program;
      5. A list of your own publications (must be on A4 sized paper);
      6. A research plan (within 2000 words) in English, French, German or Japanese only;
      7. A (prospective) Certificate of the master's degree;
      8. Examination Fee of \30,000 yen --- in the form of a "Postal Money Order (Ordinary)", on which you should leave the payees name blank;
      9. An Alien Registration Certificate Document, which is issued by the local city office (Only students who are staying in Japan now need this document for application.);
      10. Address Card, which is handed at the Admission Office.
    2. When applying by post, applicants should use "Registered Mail", and write in red "Application Documents for Tohoku University Graduate School of Law (COE Doctorate Program for Foreign Students)" on the front of the envelope.
    3. To make a request for Application Form and other documents, or for any inquiries, it is necessary to include an envelope with an appropriate return postage, and having the applicant's name, address and postal code printed clearly.
    4. Once the application documents have been accepted, no changes will be allowed.
    5. Any accepted documents will not be returned.
    6. Any accepted examination fee will not be refunded.

  6. Notification of Admission
    Students will be notified of their results by Friday, 17th September 2004.
    The notice would be on the Notice Board in front of the Admission Office in the School of Law.
    Successful applicants will receive a letter from the Office.
  7. Fees
    Successful applicants are required to pay the fees
    1. Admission Fee : ¥282,000 yen
    2. Tuition Fee : ¥260,400 yen (half term)
      (Fees are subject to change.)
  8. Research Activity and Financial Aid
    Successful applicants must carry out research related to this COE Program as COE Doctorate Students. Each COE Doctorate Student will have a supervisor to advise them with their research. Each COE Doctorate Student could be appointed a COE Assistant (Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant). In these cases, they could receive up to approximately ¥120,000 yen per month (for half year from 1st October 2004, and this could be extended until September 2006 ).  Successful applicants will receive a Special Research Grant of approximately ¥400,000 yen. This is a lump sum to be distributed at the beginning of the semester.
